Hemerocallis (Daylily) requires minimal care and offers marvelous outdoor performance and flowering ability, and is a basic necessity for any garden. They grow almost anywhere and are not particular about soil conditions. They can be used for borders, groups or naturalizing, and multiply freely. Daylilies are clump forming, featuring curving, sword-shaped leaves that grow up to 2’ long. After the foliage develops, the tall, straight, branched stalks (scapes) appear, bearing numerous flower buds. Each showy, six-petaled flower opens, matures, and withers within 24 hours. The flowers on a single stalk open a few at a time for a period of several weeks. Daylilies may be divided in spring or fall when plants become overcrowded, and prefer a moist, well drained, fertile soil with a neutral to acidic pH.
Daylilies bloom from early spring to frost, depending on the variety and the climate. Mid-season varieties typically reach their peak bloom period in July in the north and May in the south. Early to mid-season varieties may bloom 3 weeks earlier, and early season varieties 3-5 weeks earlier. Late season varieties may reach their peak bloom period 4-6 weeks after the mid-season bloomers. The re-blooming daylily varieties bloom more than once during the season. Some have a succession of bloom periods, one shortly after another for several months, and others repeat their blooms in the fall.
The “Platinum Palette” series, registered with the American Hemerocallis Association, is an exclusive line offering outstanding features such as: extended bloom, multiple scapes with high bud count, and sunfast color. These are long lasting superior hybrids with showy flowers. Individual blossoms last only a day, but the plants are continuous re-bloomers.
To plant bare root perennials, dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2” below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.
Supplied as #1 sized bare root. Tags are included with bare root perennials from DeGroot.
