Swiss Chard Seeds

Swiss chard is another nutritious vegetable and is highly regarded for its vitamin content. It is valued for the rich, green leaves it produces. Although Swiss chard is a close relative of the beet family, it does not produce roots as beets do. It was first cultivated in the Mediterranean region, and remains very popular there.

Growing tips: Swiss chard is quite delicious and much more heat tolerant than spinach, which requires cooler weather for survival. Harvest outer leaves one inch from the base when they are 8 to 10 inches high. Sow seed May through July for summer and fall harvests.

Fresh Market Grower Tips:
Swiss chard is grown for its great tasting leaves and stalks. It is still one of the most popular vegetables in the Mediterranean area, having been one of the first vegetables to be cultivated in that region. It has its place at farmers markets based on its nutritional value, especially the multi-colored mixes. Having a recipe or two for Swiss chard cannot hurt your sales.
