In horticultural circles, Platycodon (or Balloon Flower) is more often recognized as a pot plant that is grown for indoor decoration. But it is also a hardy perennial (hardy to zone 5), and makes a lovely garden perennial. Medium height plants produce sizeable blooms that start out as puffy buds that then open up into large flat five-petaled flowers. The most common color is a nice mid-blue, but there are also varieties with pink, rose or white blooms. Once established, Platycodon blooms early to mid-summer.
