Sunflowers for Cut Flower Sales - Guide

Before you begin planting seeds, it's essential to choose the right sunflowers to grow in your garden.

You can plant sunflowers according to the seasons, the pollen type or size. Many varieties require different amounts of space to grow, so you can also determine which flowers to grow based on the size of your garden or plot of land. You should also consider the types offered.

Maximize your sunflower sales by selling them with a seasonal flair. Consider grouping your flowers using the following seasonal color schemes:The Spring Look: Pastel or light-shaded petals ranging from white to peach to pastel yellow, all with light-colored disks. The Summer Look: Warm brown disks with brightly colored yellow or gold petals. The Fall Look: Color combinations in warm shades of burgundy to maroon, or combinations of golden orange and red, all with very dark brown centers.

At Harris Seeds, we sell a vast collection of sunflower seeds for farming and planting. Here are the types of sunflowers we sell:

  • Pollen-free sunflowers: If you love sunflowers but prefer a clean appearance for the flower heads, our pollen-free sunflowers are perfect for you.
  • Sunflowers with pollen: Our sunflowers with pollen can be left in the garden as a natural bird feeder or harvested for edible seeds.
  • Hedge sunflowers: If you want to have the tallest sunflowers around, consider growing hedge sunflowers. Our hedge sunflower seeds grow between 8-15 feet tall.

Dwarf sunflowers: Dwarf sunflowers are the perfect type to plant in pots. Our dwarf sunflowers are available as pollen-free and with pollen, so you can choose which is best for your needs.

Here are seven tips for growing sunflowers to help you get the most out of your garden. Read our in-depth guide to growing sunflowers for more information.

  1. Choose a full-sun location: Six to eight hours of sunlight per day is ideal for growing sunflowers.
  2. Give your flowers space to grow: Plant seedlings at least 12 inches apart, as the sunflowers will spread out over time and grow best when they have plenty of room.
  3. Add support: Wind can wreak havoc on a sunflower's blooms if they aren't given support from the start — either by staking them or tying them into place with twine or string.
  4. Use fertilizer to maximize height: Sunflowers grow quickly and need nutrients to support their growth, and fertilizer allows them to reach their full potential size.
  5. Water evenly during the growing season: Water regularly as the seedlings establish and as needed during the growing season to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  6. Include a windbreak: Sunflowers love the sun but can quickly get blown over when the wind picks up.

Place mulch down after planting: Mulch will help keep weeds from taking over the area around your sunflower plants and will also provide moisture.
