Cannas bring a touch of the tropics to wherever they are planted. They add a spectacular presence to any yard. This bright, bold-leafed tropical plant with red, pink, yellow, orange and salmon flowers has gained new interest in landscaping. They become more popular in the U.S. every year and it is easy to see why. With their lush tropical foliage and showy gladiolus-like flowers, cannas make borders and beds come alive with bright colors all summer long till frost. Cannas are easy to grow, low maintenance, and offer a beautiful show of color all summer!
These exotic looking plants are indispensable for a splendid summer border bursting with drama. They make a great centerpiece in bedding schemes and large containers. Long valued by park and municipal gardeners, home gardeners now realize their value. As soon as a stalk has finished blooming, remove it for a new one to take its place. If faded flowers are not removed, seeds will form and flowering will cease.
Plant in the spring after the ground warms to 50°F. Dig a hole 2-4" deep, place the rhizome in the hole, and cover them with soil and water thoroughly. Cannas thrive in full sunlight, heat and humidity. Give Cannas plenty of water during the growing season. Space plants 12-18" apart. Plant heights reach 2-6', depending on variety. Cannas should be lifted before the first frost of fall in areas where the ground freezes. Dig, dry-off, and store rhizomes in a well ventilated frost-free place for the winter.
