A boysenberry is a blackberry crossed with loganberry and red raspberry. The result is a large maroon berry resembling a raspberry with the flavor of wild blackberries. It is delicious eaten raw or cooked, and is good for canning and freezing. The berry is very sweet and juicy, and makes the best pies and jellies! It has very few seeds, with more flavor than standard blackberries. Boysenberries are easily grown and very productive. Space 2’–3’ apart in a row with 8–10’ between rows. Moderate moisture is required, and with proper care your plants will produce plentiful harvests for over two months. It is remarkably drought resistant. Allow the boysenberry canes to grow to a height of 18-30 the first year and then prune a few inches (“tip”) to promote lateral branching and boost fruit yield the following season. Boysenberries tend to spread by tip layering so unless you want more vines, cut back the longer vines before the tips reach the ground and root. Fruit bears on two year old canes midsummer of the second season.

Supplied as 1 year, #1 sized bare root.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT BARE ROOT PLANTS
You may be a little startled when you first encounter a ‘bare root’ plant. This is simply a plant that has had the soil washed from its roots to facilitate shipping, and to help prevent the transfer of soil-borne pathogens and pests. Our bare root plants are shipped to you in a dormant state, just prior to your planting season. Unpack your plants and submerge the roots into a bucket of water for 1 hour so the roots will begin to absorb moisture. Be sure to plant them within 48 hours, before the plants break their dormancy.
