Fresh figs in the North, grown in your own apartment! Is it possible? While it thrives outdoors, this fig tree will succeed potted if brought inside during the colder season. Chicago Hardy is high-yielding fig tree that is easy to grow. It produces small-to-medium sized edible fruit that has skin colors ranging from light brown to violet, and a sweet, rich flavor. The fruit inside is pink-red, the color of a strawberry, and can be enjoyed fresh or dried. It has vibrant leaves that have a similar shape to oak leaves, only much larger. The plant prefers full to part sun, and can freeze to the ground and come back to produce a crop in the same year. You can protect the plant by covering it with a layer of leaves around the base. Height: 10-12' Spacing: 3-6'. Fruit will ripen and be ready to eat by late summer until fall. Self-pollinating. Hardiness zones 5-8.
