Royal Fern has broad leafy looking fronds that are airy and graceful. In summer, a cluster of fertile rust-colored, delicate fronds is produced from its center. From a distance, it looks like a flower spike and explains its old name of "flowering fern". It creates a focal point to any bog garden, pond margin, or flower border. It has a long life span relative to most other plant species. You can leave dead fronds on the plant through the winter to help protect the crown. It typically grows in clumps 24-48" tall, but with optimum growing conditions can reach 6'. Osmunda fiber used in the potting of orchids comes from the fibrous roots of these ferns.
