Sambucus canadensis (American Elderberry) grows into a tall deciduous upright shrub providing yellowish-green fall color. It can sucker and will widen its range where planted. The foliage is attractive, and it is easy to grow, yielding large clusters of red to dark blue to black fruit that birds love. It is useful in a hedge, shrub border and naturalized plantings. To control size, you can cut it back to the ground each year, as it blooms on new and old wood. It is easily pruned to shape.

They prefer moist, well-drained soil and grow rapidly in sunny locations. If you are looking to attract birds and wildlife to your landscape, look no further. The characteristics that make this species so visually appealing – showy flowers, stunning fruit, winter color – are some of nature’s most powerful draws for the animal kingdom.

To plant bare root perennials, dig a hole large enough to encompass the roots without bending or circling. Set the plant in place so the crown (part of the plant where the root meets the stem) is about 1-2” below the soil surface. Cover with soil to the original soil surface and water thoroughly.

Supplied as 12-18” bare root. Tags are included with bare root perennials from DeGroot.
