Reviews

lettuce blend as of May 8

"I started this lettuce with cold sowing in February. It has been a really cold and dry sping in NJ, I finally got it out into the garden in mid-April, and it is just now beginning to flourish. Looking forward to a big salad in the next few days. Can't figure out how to attach a picture of the lovely stuff!"

Lettuce Harris Blend

"Really enjoy a leaf lettuce that delivers taste ! It’s a tender lettuce but grows profusely and slow to bolt as advertised. Nice to eat a salad and taste the lettuce even after dressing has been applied."

Q&A

Do you cover the seeds
Hi Debra, Lettuce grows best when very lightly covered with a dusting of soil. Please see our blog article, "How To Grow Lettuce" here: https://www.harrisseeds.com/blogs/from-the-ground-up/how-to-grow-lettuce
Hi I’m planting lettuce Harris’ blend. I’m direct seeding it in a raised bed. So I just make a little trough and leave it uncovered so the light will germinate the Seed. Is that correct? I’ve never heard of such a thing. Snow is predicted in my area for tonight. Any recommendations? Should I cover it lightly with straw. I planted two packets on Monday 4/12/21 and I’ve sprayed the soil with a spray bottle of water.
Hi Melissa, When planting lettuce seed you can leave it uncovered or cover very lightly with a dusting of soil or vermiculite. Sometimes covering the seed lightly will keep it from washing away during watering. Some lettuce does need light to germinate, but a light covering will not prohibit that. If you are expecting snow or frost in your area it is a good idea to cover with a row cover or other protection like straw mulch as suggested. If you choose to use straw, it will need to be pulled away from the seedlings until they grow taller than the straw, but if a row cover is used it can be left over the plants for an extended time, as the air, water, and light can penetrate the material.
