African marigolds (sometimes also recognized as American Marigolds) are beloved for their bright large, fully double flower heads, which tend to shed water better than other species of Marigold. Varieties are generally in the yellow, gold and orange color spectrum, and plant heights range from dwarf (10”) to tall (36”).Some of the African types are sensitive to day length, and initiate flowers faster under short days. For best results, the marigold seed should be sown before March 15th in northern regions and February 15th in southern regions. If Marigold seeds are sown after that date, a means of shortening the day length to 9 hours or less (such as a black cloth) may be utilized in the greenhouse to produce faster blooms on shorter plants.
