This award winner is quite a departure for ornamental growers. The corn-like plant grows attractive deep purple foliage, stems and flower plumes. Each plant produces one to three main stems on tall plants with 12 to 14" plumes, complemented by a few secondary shoots.
Under full to partial sun, they produce the deepest purple color with narrower leaves. Less light produces wider and greener leaves. Best suited for 4" containers and higher, Purple Majesty makes an excellent garden focal point, or can be used in mass plantings. The flower spikes can be cut and used to enhance flower arrangements.
The ornamental millet Purple Majesty variety is easy to grow, with the seeds only taking three to five days to germinate under warm conditions. It is best to start growing ornamental millet seeds indoors a few weeks before the day of the last frost. You can move the plant outdoors once the soil has warmed for proper growth and higher germination rates.
This stunning, fast-growing plant performs best with exposure to full sun in well-drained and evenly moist, fertile soils. It can also withstand droughts and dry soil, making it suitable for many growing environments.

I love this millet
"I have planted this millet in our stock trough planters and elsewhere for several years and love its color and configuration, surrounded by petunias and other flowers. However, the cardinals and sometimes finches love it too - which is great viewing - but their weight breaks the stalks. If the millet had stronger stalks I would have given this a 5. I also wish it wasn't so expensive - but it appears production costs are high so I'll live with that. I'll definitely plant it next year."

"I grow this for its seeds, which I put out (still on the stem) for birds in the winter. It is lovely in the garden too, with its purple foliage. Must be protected from deer, who I do not want to feed."

Q&A
- As a home grower, how should I interpret "weeks indoor" in terms of plant maturity? A germination of 3-5 days +9-18 weeks indoors has me concerned that I'll have big bushes to transplant instead of young (but mature) plants.
- Hi Jason, The Weeks Indoor information is mostly used by commercial greenhouse growers for garden center sales. The weeks indicate "Weeks to Finish" or weeks until the plant becomes saleable. Sorry for the confusion!
- why can't i get ornamental millet in the packet of 25 seeds rather than 100 seeds
