We discovered this amazing colorful ornamental growing in the field of one of our New England customers. Never have we seen such a wide diversity of color in one variety. Tall sturdy plants produce 8-11" ears ranging from yellow and white, deep maroon red, solid yellow, black-red, and a wide assortment of multicolored ears. We believe this variety commands the large ornamental marketplace. This one is a must for fall ornamental displays.

Following wheat harvest we decided

"Following wheat harvest we decided to double crop silage feed into one field. We placed ornamental corn seed in one end of the planter and were able to make two quarter mile passes (4 rows) with 5 pounds of seed. Germination was excellent, an the plants outgrew both the sorghum silage and the field corn. We didn't have a huge harvest, as the raccoons and deer fell in love with these rows and ignored the rest of a 25 acre field. The harvested corn is very pretty, they just beat us to a lot of it. With better management, we'd have had many, many ears!"

"Planted this corn late. It germinated well. Did have trouble with the stalks going all over, bending and falling over. Lost half of crop???Not sure if it was a wind problem or maybe fertilization issue?? Will try again next year."

Ornamental Corn

"Alert for another day ornamental corn seeds mostly all germinated. The growth has been great. The stalks stand between 8 and 10 foot high and are thick and strong. 2 ears per stalk. Very satisfied"

Q&A

What herbicide should be used post emergence for weed control without killing the corn?
Thank you for your question about chemical application. To be sure you get the most current and effective recommendations for your location and operation, we suggest contacting your local cooperative extension. If you do not know your local cooperative extension's contact information, you can look it up at this site. https://www.nifa.usda.gov/land-grant-colleges-and-universities-partner-website-directory Hope that helps!
Is this a sweet corn to you can eat and make malt out of Kind regards Allan
Hi Allan, Thanks for your question! We don't technically classify Wilda's Pride as anything other than ornamental and we wouldn't consider it a sweet corn. If you want to make malt, we would recommend a dent variety that has higher starch.
What does the treatment mean? Would I be able to spray this seed with roundup to prevent weeds and other insecticides?
Hi Tara, Please see our article on treated seed: https://www.harrisseeds.com/blogs/from-the-ground-up/guide-to-seed-treatments Please note, this seed is not herbicide tolerant, so do not spray the plants with Roundup. Only herbicide tolerant varieties, like our Biotech Sweet Corn varieties, can be safely sprayed with Round-up. https://www.harrisseeds.com/pages/biotech-sweet-corn-program
Is this an heirloom corn?
Hi Bryan, Wilda's Pride Ornamental Corn is an OP variety and can be considered an heirloom.
