Espresso sweet corn has shown great cold soil tolerance and produces a large ear for early corn sales. This synergistic se bicolor produces 8" ears and has a great plant type for an early variety. Its tender kernels fill the ear well to the tip in 14-16 straight rows and are covered with a tight husk and dark green flags. The sturdy 6' plants hold there ears at 20". Intermediate resistance to common rust and Stewart's bacterial wilt. Use for early plantings only. Not recommended for use as a mid season filler.

Dependable, and tastes good

"Soil temps here in our corner of Idaho to plant corn typically doesn't come until Memorial Day. This was recommended by a friend and it now has become one I can depend on producing before fall frost. It is good producer, tastes great, and our excess freezes well while maintaining its flavor. Highly recommend, especially in harsher climates"

Great for the PNW

"spresso Corn Review I’ve grown Espresso three years in a row in Western Washington, and it performs really well in the PNW. We usually plant about 200 seeds after Mother’s Day and get plenty of full ears for eating fresh, canning, and freezing. The flavor is sweet with a strong corn taste, but it’s best picked promptly—if left too long, it loses its crisp bite. Germination isn’t perfect, but even after three years using the same seed batch, the results were still impressive. Overall, a dependable variety with good yield and flavor."

Great for the PNW

"I'm a residential gardener who lives in the Seattle area where it takes a long time for the summer to arrive. This is my go-to variety for strong emergence in the cold Seattle soil that gives me a great shot at a late-August harvest with pretty good flavor/sugars. I plant 160 row feet of this variety each year. It has a peak harvest window of about 5 days, and is quite edible a few days before its peak. Given our short summers, corn that needs warm soil to emerge may not have long enough to produce a good crop. I still plant those for the summers that turn out great."

Q&A

I live in Washington state zone 8b I had good luck with Sweet Corn Vision F1 this year, but wanted to start a little earlier with Sweet Corn Espresso F1. How early in the growing season can these be planted?
Hi Ty, Sweet Corn Espresso is a 70 day bicolor. It has shown good cold soil tolerance and should be used for early plantings. Most sweet corn prefers a warm soil temperature to germinate. Corn that shows good cold tolerance can typically be planted even earlier when soil temps are around 60-65 degrees F. Below this temperature the corn may not germinate properly or may be damaged by cooler temps. Some seed lots should not be planted early and are labelled as such with a neon pink sticker advising our customers to wait until soil temps are above 65 degrees F. Weather can change drastically season to season. Base your seeding date on the average soil temps in your region.
