Fantastic Celery Seed

"Planted organic celery seed early February 2023. Zone 4. Virtually every seed germinated. Planted in pre-moistened organic seed starting mix. Surface sown and covered with plastic wrap. No heat mats, just room temp. Success!"

Q&A

This is the first time growing celery. We are growing your seeds of the Celery Tango Organic Seed. We only had two plants produce from the whole packet. Going past that, I am curious about this plant. The two that are growing look like they ave a root that looks like a white and purple turnip. Is that normal? Like I said, we've never grown celery before so we don't know what to expect. They have quite a few stalks coming out of each plant. They are getting pretty long so we bound them up with some stretchy bands. The leaves on top are huge. Is that normal? Please let me know what to expect and how long we should let them grow before harvesting. Thanks.
Hello Fran and thank you for contacting us. Celery is a very tiny seed and most commercial growers start this crop in early spring as it requires a long season. Much like parsley, it can take upwards of three weeks to germinate and should not be buried deeply. They do produce multiple stalks per plant and the leaves are quite large (they also look very similar to flat leaf parsley when small). They like moist, rich soil so provide them with plenty of water and if you are able, side dress them with compost or fertilize them with a general all purpose fertilizer. Many growers bind them with stretchy bands though this is not necessary. The stalks are usually strong and will stand upright without the extra assistance. If you prefer smaller stalks you can harvest early, or you can allow them to grow all summer and harvest once the plants are large and resemble the celery you would see at a grocery store. Its really up to you! Regarding your question about the appearance of the root - without seeing pictures, it's difficult to answer, but you may want to do an online image search for comparison. If you would like to discuss your experience with the germination of the seed, please feel free to call us at 800-544-7938 so we can help troubleshoot.
