Jiffy Pellets are made of sterile peat growing medium, enclosed in a decomposable net. This net biodegrades in garden soil or compost, but it retains strength through the critical seedling and transplant stages. No pot is needed, and the growing medium offers great aeration and water retention. Speed and degree of decomposition will vary with soil or compost conditions. Each 1/4" thick compressed peat pellet expands to a 1-11/16" diameter (42 mm) x 1-11/16 tall cylinder.

Jiffy 7 Pellets

"I have been using these for years with great success. It helps me to get an early start in mid-winter without having to deal with soil at the start. To avoid diseases, I always boil the water I use to activate the pellets for 3 minutes, then allow it to cool off for about 30 minutes or so. So that they expand evenly, you can either turn them upside down, then right-side up after a few seconds, or just mist the tops before you add the hot water. Be careful not to pour directly onto the pellets. I usually do this the day before I use them. I've noticed that the newer Jiffy-7 pellets can dry out more quickly, so you have to be careful not to let them dry out. Add water to the bottom of your tray and mist the tops at the same time. Sometimes the tops can dry if you only water from the bottom of the tray. Keep them very moist for about a week, then let up slightly on the watering and the seeds will usually come up at that point. Be sure to use heat mats. If you're starting something like watermelons, keep the seeds under plastic to add the extra warmth they need to germinate. You can move them off the heat mat once they germinate, and make sure to give the seedlings strong light to keep them from getting leggy. If you're growing cold loving plants like lettuce/cabbage/broccoli, move them to a cool place. I've been using Harris Seeds for over 40 years and I always have great success with their seeds."

Fast delivery, quality product

"I have become a big fan of these pellets for seed starting, and I’m a fan of Harris as well. I always peel off the casing before planting, though."

Q&A

One more question about jiffy pellets: do I need to use fertilizer once plants have cotelydons? The seedlings don't seem to be growing as fast as they have in the past (when I used growing soil in peat pots, not jiffy pots). Other than using jiffy pellets, all conditions are the same or better than in the past (new lights, same room, same temp, etc.). Thanks, Margaret
Hello! Thank you for reaching out. This particular product is solely used for seed starting. Once your seedlings have their true leaves, you will pot up your starts into bigger containers. At which point, you may apply fertilizer. We hope this helps. Happy growing!
Any special instructions for using jiffy pellets? Do I need to add any soil, or just drop seed into the center hole? Some seeds need to be exposed to light; others need dark, or at least some cover. I want to do what the particular variety requires, and am not sure how to do that with these pellets. Some that require light have sprouted well when I drop the seed in. But what about seeds that need it darker?
Hello! Thank you for reaching out. This is an excellent question. There is no need to add extra soil to these pellets. For varieties that require dark for germination, simply pinch the opening of the pellet closed after planting and then water to seal the hole. We hope this helps! Happy planting!
